Our Story
From a Small Gathering to a Community Legacy
From humble beginnings at Jim’s Bait Shop to community-wide efforts, our story is rooted in passion for Lake Superior and its future.
Our History
The roots of our organization go back to 1985, when a small group of passionate anglers believed in the potential of the west end of Lake Superior. While most attention—and funding—was focused on Lake Michigan during the salmon boom, these local visionaries saw the beauty and possibilities of our own great lake and knew it deserved a voice.
The Founding Members
Among the six original founders were Alex Johnson, Jim Kuetin (of Jim’s Bait), Alex Kotter, Henry Peters, and Pete Martwig. Their early conversations began in the back of Jim’s Bait Shop, where the idea of creating a group to advocate for Lake Superior first took shape.
From Picnics to Tradition
The first gatherings were simple—family-style picnics and friendly, Jaws-like contests at the Park Point Boat Launch recreation area. These events quickly grew in popularity, blossoming into an annual contest and fundraiser that became a hallmark tradition.
In search of better summer weather, the event migrated for a few years to Knife River in late July, before briefly returning to Duluth. As participation continued to grow and boats became larger, the group eventually found its long-term home at Barker’s Island.
Building a Stronger Community
In its early years, the club published a twice-a-year newsletter that reached more than 1,500 subscribers at its peak. The newsletter kept members informed on new fishing methods, community events, and the group’s efforts to advocate for policies that would benefit anglers and the local fishery.
Key Projects and Advocacy
From the beginning, the organization was driven by action. Four major projects were at the heart of its early advocacy efforts:
- Establishing safe harbors between Brule and Superior, Knife River, and Duluth
- Developing Loonsfoot Boat Launch with a fish cleaning station for better lake access
- Supporting Chinook salmon stocking to enhance fishing opportunities
- Engaged in strategic planning efforts supporting the 10-year management plans for Minnesota and Wisconsin
Over the years, three of these four ambitious goals were achieved—tangible results that have left a lasting impact on the fishing community.
Champions of the Cause
Many members contributed their time, energy, and expertise, but a few stood out for their tireless dedication. Leon Theilman, Pete Martwig, Axel Johnson, and Don King (father of Matt from Fisherman’s Corner) attended countless meetings with government entities and poured countless hours into building the foundation for the club’s success.
A Lasting Legacy
What began as a handful of friends talking in a bait shop has grown into a vibrant community dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and celebrating Lake Superior. Their vision ensured that anglers on the western side of the lake would have the same opportunities, recognition, and resources as those on Lake Michigan.
Today, we honor their legacy by continuing the work they started—supporting fisheries, advocating for access, and celebrating the incredible resource we are privileged to enjoy.
